In our house, the word for passing gas is "toot", used with much frequency in a house full of boys. They’ve tried to substitute the "F-word," but to no avail. I think it’s rude and crass, even for my already-hard-to-tame boys.
At a dinner party last night with close friends and relatives including 7 boys, I polled the group for what word they use in their families to “clear the room.” There were many, some unmentionable and with too great explanation to go into here. The most popular: poot, toot, pongu, fluff and shoo-shoo. The last one I overheard our babysitter use with butterbain last week. She said in families with girls you make up cute words for such things . Of course, I wouldn’t know much about "girl" families.
A few days later I asked butterbain if he had "shoo-shoo’d", just like the babysitter did and made a funny face, etc. He looked at me very seriously and said, “I don’t say shoo-shoo, Mom, I say….FART!!” then he stomped off as if I’d insulted his manhood.
I'll keep trying to tame them, one 4-letter word at time!
